1. Monte Albán-Atzompa
10 am and 3 pm everyday. $US18.00 per

Monte Albán. Only 8 kilometers from Oaxaca City, Monte Albán
was founded around 500 AD by people fro the nearby Valley towns.
It was capital of the Zapotecs, and one of the first cities of Mesoamerica
being very populated during its peak. It flourished until 750 AD,
reaching its peak around 600 AD. Located in the center of the Valley
of Oaxaca Monet Albán held political, economic, and ideological
control over other communities around the Valley and surrounding
mountains. It boasted more than 25,000 inhabitants.
Atzompa. This town is just 8 kilomters from Oaxaca city. An ideal
place to see how the beautiful terracotta and green-glazed items
are made. The pots are made following ancient, ancestral techniques.
2. Santa María El Tule - Teotitlán
del Valle - Mitla.

Santa María El Tule. Among
the natural beauties of this town is the huge, ahuehuete cypress
called "El Árbol del Tule". The tree is a wonderful
example of Oaxacan flora, 40 meters high with a diameter of 52.58
meters, it weights around 509 tons and is approximately 2000 years
old. We suggest you visit the handcraft market of the community
and to sample the wide variety of local foods.
Teotitlán del Valle. This
town is where woolen rugs are made on domestic looms. The artisans
here use natural dyes such as indigo, moss and grana cochinilla.
We will take you to an artisan´s house to see the process
of making a rug.
Mitla. Its name in Nahuatl means
"Place of the Dead", while the Zapotecs called it lyobaa,
meaning "Place of burials"
Mitla was a place of residence for the Zapotec priestly class.
It was inhabited from the classic period of Monte Albán (100
to 650 AD) , and reached its peak in the post-classical period (750
to 1521 AD). The layout of the city was probably planned with structures
grouped in five sets, currently called the Columns, the Church,
the Stream, the Adobes and the South.

In this tour you will admire architectural gems, several galleries,
catedral, the zocalo, the markets, a chocolate factory, Santo Domingo
church, the exconvent of Santo Domingo were we will visit the treasures
of tomb 7 from Monte Alban.

4. Yagul – Tlacochahuaya

Yagul. 36 kilometers
from Oaxaca city is this important prehispanic center whose name
literally means “stick or old tree”. Among its monuments
is a ball court, the largest in the Oaxaca region and the second
in size in all Mesoamerica. The mos interesting remains are the
“Palace with six patios”, a huge construction with several
rooms of complex distribution and intercommunication that makes
us think it was probably a governors residence
Tlacochahuaya. 23
kilometers from Oaxaca city on highway 190, turn right to find this
town, whose name in Nahuatl means “humid place”.
The 16th century religious complex, built by Dominicas, is worth
visiting.
The original interior décor is still visible, with frescos
painted with grana cochinilla (a natural red dye). Some of the altarpieces
were made by the painter Juan de Arrué and there is also
a recently restored 17th century polychrome tubular organ.
5. Coyotepec – Jalieza

Coyotepec. It is
located12 kilometers along Federal Highway 175. Its main attraction
is the black pottery made by local artisans, who produce extraordinary
beautiful items using openwork and polishing techniques. These articles
can be bought in the handicraft market or in the houses of the craftsmen
themselves. We´ll visit Doña Rosa´s workshop
to see the process of making black pottery.
Jalieza. 30 minutes
from the city. The archeological site –as yet unexplored-
is comparable in importance to Monte Albán. People in tis
town produce woolen and cotton items using back strap looms. The
designs and colors vary, but the motifs are usually typical of the
area. Among the most common products are dresses, blouses, bags,
napkins, underclothes, table cobres, belts and bracelets.
Tilcajete. This
town is famous for its alebrijes, an invented word that means “entangled
and difficult thing of confusing or fantastic type”. These
are made of wood from the copal tree.
