The greatness of Oaxaca is not only in the capitol. The neighboring
villages also have rich Archeological Sites, architecture from Colonial
times and the Porfiriato, Community Museums and handcrafts.
Here you have several routes:
San Bartolo Coyotepec
It is located 12 kilometers along Federal Highway 175. Its main
attraction is the black pottery made by local artisans, who produce
extraordinary beautiful items using openwork and polishing techniques.
These articles can be bought in the handicraft market or in the
houses of the craftsmen themselves. Visit Doña
Rosa´s Workshop to see the process of making black pottery.
San Martin Tilcajete
It is located 21 kilometers or 25 minutes southeast of Oaxaca City,
on Highway 175 (towards Puerto
Angel). This town is famous for its Alebrijes,
an invented word that means "entangled and difficult thing of confusing
or fantastic type". These are made of wood from the copal tree.
Santo Tomás Jalieza
It is located 25 kilometers or 30 minutes southeast of Oaxaca City
on Highway 175. The archeological site -as yet unexplored- is comparable
in importance to Monte
Albán. People in tis town produce woolen and cotton items using
back strap looms. The designs and colors vary, but the motifs are
usually typical of the area. Among the most common products are
dresses, blouses, bags, napkins, underclothes, table cobres, belts

Ocotlan de Morelos
It is located 33 kilometers from Oaxaca City. One of the main attractions
of this town is the tianguis or market which is held on Fridays.
It is famous because it is one of the biggest and most diverse of
Central Valley markets.
It is a must to try the delicious ice-cream sold in the market,
prepared with natural ingredients. Also try the mouth watering,
traditional chocolate atole. The pan de yema (bread prepared with
egg yolk), and typical candies with that countryside taste are further
examples of the diverse gastronomical feast awaiting you here.
Red pottery work, such as pots and apaxtles, as well as rustic kitchen
tools are also available. Ask for the Aguilar
sisters, famous local artisans.
Among the many festivities of religious origin in the town, is the
celebration dedicated to Jesus in the Dominican church, which takes
place on the second Sunday of May.
The Rodolfo Morales Foundation
is based in this town. It is named after a famous painter who, personally
rescued and restored the ex-Convent.
