Oaxaca Estudio Abierto

Askari Mateos
The dates July 20, 21 & 22, mark a significant event in Oaxaca, known as Oaxaca Estudio Abierto, designed to promote interaction between local artists and those members of the public interested in creative endeavors. During its final two days, between 5 pm and 9 pm, painters, sculptors, ceramicists and photographers will be opening their studios or workshops to exhibit their art.

Oscar Carrizosa, coordinator of the event for the second consecutive year, has emphasized that its purpose will be “to showcase the artists and where they work, and while their studios and workshops are open to the public those interested will have and opportunity to speak and interact with them, with a view to learning more about where and how such reknowned artistry has brought fame to the state”.

Carrizosa continued: “Oaxaca Estudio Abierto is a unique and enjoyable format by which to appreciate art, meet the artists, explore various neighborhoods in Oaxaca and acquire pieces for one’s own collection”.

The inaugural event of Oaxaca Estudio Abierto will take place on July 20th at 8 pm, at the Institute of Graphic Arts of Oaxaca (IAGO), where its director, Ernesto Lumbreras, and artists Jonathan Barbieri, Demián Flores, Gabriela León, Mauricio Cervantes and Luis Hampshire will chair a forum known as Conversaciones Oaxaca Estudio Abierto, welcoming dialogue involving all those present to discuss the state of painting (and art in general) produced in Oaxaca.

On July 21st through July 22nd, from 5 pm to 9 pm in the evening, the artists will open their studios to the public; at the same time the Curtiduría workshop –a former leather tanning factory- will present Amarillo, a collective exhibition of works by Demián Flores, Adriana Calatayud, Luis Hampshire, Jessica Wozny, Alejandro Echeverría and Emilia Sandoval. Location: 5 de Mayo 307, in nearby Jalatlaco and at the same time for those who prefer to mix art with fine mescal, Oscar Carrizosa and Jonathan Barbieri present their works at Casa Crespo, Cresp 415, Centro Histórico together with a sampling of some of Oaxaca´s best mezcals.

The event will also have transport service leaving from Casa Crespo at 4 pm, both days. On the 22nd of July, at 10 am a guided tour will leave, from the same place, for San Agustín, Etla to vist artists´ studios, the paper workshop and the Centro de las Artes de San Agustín. (CASA).
