Boris Spider, collage and trash art
artist
With a 15 year trajectory as a multidisciplinary artist, Boris “Spider”
finds that every time the day of the dead season approaches interest in
his art increases. This is because his work oscillates between death and
the sacred, something he has names “arqueopop” which is nothing
more than an ensemble to “deepen our ancient cultures by adding
a touch of contemporary art, with pop art”.
For Boris “Spider” the collective burials or “Tzonpantlis”
are very attractive because of all the magic and the rites these imply.
He has taken this to the extreme of composing these representations of
recycled things such as cans, razor blades, rocks, paper and even combs,
scissors and pieces of utensils such as plates and spoons.
It’s enough to go and eat at Los Danzantes to observe its day of
the dead motif created by this artist who has not gone unnoticed by national
critics. They have written many reviews about his long list of expositions
in literary magazines such as Tierra Adentro, Palabarte, as well as in
newspapers such as Universal, Ovaciones, El Imparcial and Noticias.
This collage and trash artist has participated in grandiloquent sets and
performances in the city of Oaxaca in the most important spaces such as
the Museum of Contemporary Art of Oaxaca, la Casa de la Cultura Oaxaqueña
and the Centro Cultural Santo Domingo, among others.
At the end of the millennium Boris “Spider” was invited by
CONACULTA make a contemporary procession (calenda) using the most representative
creations of the most important Oaxacan artists. He built 50 giant figures
to dance in the Historic Center.
This is how the multidisciplinary artist, who according to Leonardo Pino,
“is the protagonist of the tradition of rupture”, presents
his creations in many spaces in the city, such as the Taller Araña,
(Spider workshop) in which he teaches Oaxacan children how to carve alebrijes.
During this Day of the Dead season Boris “Spider”, who has
more than 20 individual and collective expositions and performances, will
hold an exhibition in the Taller Araña, where he will show contemporary
representations in the collage style of the funerary burials found in
Teotihuacàn.
